For literary critic Darko Suvin, the key to cognitive estrangement is the presence in a story or novel of what he calls a ‘novum’, that is a device or machine that is absolutely new and whose presence compels us to imagine a different way of conceiving our world. One of my favorite writers, China Miéville, gave a talk comparing science fiction and fantasy in this cognitive estrangement context.
Lately I’ve noticed that I like seeking and inhabiting and grappling with cognitive estrangement. So much so that I’m adjusting this newsletter to fit this pursuit. I’ll share morsels of my engagement with the strange.
